Nets may be digging out of worst trade ever

We have our first big reported transaction of the 2018 NBA offseason! From Paste BN Sports:

The Charlotte Hornets have agreed to trade center Dwight Howard to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for center Timofey Mozgov, two future second-round picks and cash, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Paste BN Sports.

All everyone can talk about is how sad it is to see Dwight Howard - a lock for the Hall of Fame - swapped for Timofey Mozgov's terrible contract as the star center joins his fourth team in four years.

But this means so much more to the Nets, as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski alluded to in this tweet:

All the way back in 2013, the Brooklyn Nets made a trade so bad that it's crippled the franchise for a whole five years.

It was the now-infamous Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry et al swap with the Boston Celtics for Gerald Wallace, a bunch of role players, three first-rounders and a swap of first-rounders in 2017.

We know what happened there: the drafted Jaylen Brown with one of those picks, Jayson Tatum with another, and the eighth pick this year went to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Kyrie Irving trade.

Can you imagine what the Nets could have done with all those selections?

Now, look at what position they're in. They've got a group of point guards with promise and talent in Spencer Dinwiddie, D'Angelo Russell and - if he's healthy - Jeremy Lin. Caris LeVert and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson are useful young two-way pieces. Allen Crabbe is a solid shooter/scorer. Not bad for a team that hasn't had a lottery pick since - welp! - 2010.

And now, they're a season away from clearing a boatload of money off their books, enough to, say, lure a couple of superstars who want to play together.

If you're a Nets fan, this is your "light at the end of the tunnel" moment. Assuming the team plays its cards right. they're a season away from relevancy and maybe more.
