Pirates reliever Steven Brault sang national anthem before Brewers game
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Steven Brault played a different role on the field Tuesday night at the team's 3-2 home loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Instead of taking over on the mound, the reliever stood just behind home plate before the game started and beautifully sang the national anthem in uniform. According to MLB.com, the left-hander was in theater and choir programs growing up and he majored in vocal performance. His bio on Regis University's roster also states his career ambition - at least then - was to be a musical performer.
When he was finished, his teammates cheered and enthusiastically congratulated him on a job well done.
"It's something specifically my grandma always wanted me to do," Brault told MLB.com's Adam Berry. "She wanted me to sing the national anthem before a Major League game that I got to play in, so that's part of it."
Before his performance, he also explained that him singing was also about "showing people, showing kids, that it's OK to do other things", ESPN reported. Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving recently said something similar about why he starred in High School Musical as a teenager.
Here is another video of Brault singing the national anthem at a minor league game.
