WNBA game cancelled after team's travel woes
Update: The game was cancelled an hour before tip-off, because really, no one wants to play after this kind of travel nightmare.
The Las Vegas Aces were scheduled to play the Washington Mystics on Friday at 7 p.m. EST. The plan, originally, was for them to get in on Thursday and then have practice on Friday morning before tipping off.
But then, came a travel nightmare.
According to the players' Twitter accounts, they began their journey on Thursday afternoon.
Even the team's account got into it:
In addition to having a packed regular-season schedule, many WNBA players also play year-round - they earn a much bigger paycheck overseas. Last month, coach Bill Laimbeer spoke to the Las Vegas Review-Journal about flying commercial.
Laimbeer flew commercially during part of his playing career with the Detroit Pistons, who in 1988 were the first NBA team to implement charter travel.
He relayed an understanding of the challenges of commercial flights, but pointed out it's the standard across the WNBA and that teams must work through it because it's unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.
"Everybody has to go through it. You have to play it," Laimbeer said. "You can't hang your head. You have to say, 'I'm not tired.'"
By Friday morning, the tip-off was delayed an hour. And then, as people were piling into the arena, it was cancelled.
