Phil Mickelson goes on birdie spree
Phil Mickelson's had an unspectacular summer after winning a WGC event back in March, but the 48-year-old might be finding his old form just in time for the upcoming Ryder Cup - and his mega-money match with Tiger Woods.
Mickelson is 11th in the FedEx Cup standings entering the first playoff event this week - and he's put himself in contention through two rounds at The Northern Trust. Following an opening round 68, Mickelson began his second round with four consecutive birdies.
Mickelson rolled in a 21-foot birdie putt at the ninth, then holed a 13-foot birdie putt at the 10th. At the 214-yard par-3 11th, Mickelson's tee shot was nearly perfect.
Mickelson dropped to 5-under on his round and grabbed the tournament lead with a birdie at the first, but finished his round with consecutive bogeys to finish the first 36 holes at 6-under par.
