Wade Miley: Brewers' quick pitching change stuns MLB world
The past few MLB postseasons has seen teams take an unconventional approach to managing pitchers. One would think that a starter's goal is to go deep into a game, but Brewers pitcher Wade Miley wasn't given that chance on Wednesday.
Miley started Game 5 of the NLCS against the Dodgers, and he threw five pitches on a walk to Cody Bellinger. That was it.
Manager Craig Counsell immediately went to the bullpen and brought in reliever Brandon Woodruff. According to the FS1 broadcast, the plan was to have the left-handed Miley face the Dodgers' lefty lead-off man before giving way to Woodruff. It also forced the Dodgers to roll out a righty-heavy lineup. Miley was on short rest - just three days - and can now start for Game 6.
Teams like the Rays have used the opener this season, but it was still odd to see Miley face just one batter and get pulled. MLB fans were absolutely surprised. According to Baseball Reference, Miley was the second postseason starter to face one batter in MLB history.
