Patriots stopped Bears' Hail Mary attempt at the 1

The Patriots took their "bend, don't break" defense to the absolute limit on Sunday against the Bears.

With New England leading by seven points and two seconds remaining, the Bears had to go for a Hail Mary to tie the game. Expecting that Chicago was going deep with the throw (rather than a lateral play), New England brought in receiver Josh Gordon to help with coverage. Still, the Bears nearly tied the game.

They came a yard short.

Mitch Trubisky connected with Kevin White at the one, and as the Bears receiver looked to extend the ball across the goal line, the Patriots defense converged to make the stop.

It's one thing to give up a completion on a Hail Mary. It's another to stop it three feet short.

The Patriots will take the result, though: A 38-31 win.
