NBA trend: Doing handshakes after teammates leave

Athletes are at their best when they're in a routine - whatever that includes - which keeps them calm and focused.

But a handshaker doing his routine without the handshake-ee around to complete it? That's beyond routine.

It started with Kyle Lowry - you can see how he faux dapped up an invisible DeMar DeRozan after his friend was traded to the San Antonio Spurs:

Lowry later confirmed that was the case - it was "superstition" and that it was for himself even though DeRozan will always be his "best friend":

Meanwhile, in Oklahoma City, longtime Thunder forward Nick Collison retired earlier this year, yet Steven Adams appeared to handshake the spot Collison once stood in:

Whether it's tradition or tribute, it's delightful.
