Jorginho sent Italy to the Euro 2020 final with the absolute calmest penalty attempt against Spain
It’s difficult to imagine a stronger and faster comeback on the international soccer stage than what Italy is pulling off. And it has a chance to get even better.
Just four years after missing out its first World Cup since 1958, Italy is heading to the UEFA Euro 2020 final after Tuesday’s 1-1 win over Spain in penalties. The Azzurri will face the winner of England-Denmark (Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET, ESPN).
But it’s how Italy won the shootout that has everyone talking.
Moments after Alvaro Morata — who came off the bench to score the equalizing goal for Spain in regulation — was stopped on a dreadful penalty attempt from the spot, Italy's Jorginho stepped up to take the decisive penalty.
And from how Jorginho took the shot, you’d never know that he was under any pressure at all.
With the UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea, Jorginho is the Blues’ designated penalty taker because he’s generally money from the spot. Rather than going for power with a smooth approach, Jorginho has a knack for hopping and getting the goalkeeper to break a direction.
That allows Jorginho to simply guide the ball into the net, and it worked to perfection with a trip to the Euro 2020 final on the line.
