At 41-61 just before the trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers have had a tough year all around. But on Saturday, they had the Toronto Blue Jays up against the wall on the road.

Between Toronto’s core of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, and Bo Bichette — the trio combined for just two hits against Tigers pitching all afternoon. The Jays as a team only had four hits. You would think, under those circumstances, that Detroit would prove capable of holding onto its 3-1 lead through almost six innings for the win.

Ah, but there’s the rub. When he came into the game in his first MLB appearance since July 10, 2021, relief pitcher Derek Law went on to have one of the worst half innings in MLB history.

"I could have calmed myself down a little bit," Law said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I was pretty amped up."

When Law left the mound, the Blue Jays were holding a 5-3 lead — the final score of the ballgame.

"He didn't execute a (cutter) to a good offense and didn't field his position on a comebacker that could've got him out of the inning," manager A.J. Hinch said. "As we've said for three straight days, extra runners and extra outs against these guys is dangerous."
