With the 2022 NFL season officially in the books, this weekend saw the XFL open its 2023 campaign, which will run through the spring until mid-May.

Sunday's action featured the St. Louis Battlehawks and San Antonio Brahmas squaring off on ESPN/ABC. After Brahmas kicker John Parker Romo nailed a late first-quarter field goal to give his team a 3-0 lead, the Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo somehow came into focus.

Announcer Matt Barrie simply couldn't resist making a joking connection between the Cowboys, their former quarterback, and a "Romo" playing a football game in February. The joke came entirely out of the blue, and that's what made it absolute gold.

The deadpan delivery of the observation sells it perfectly. In case it needs to be clarified, Tony Romo never played in a game in February (a.k.a. the Super Bowl), and the Cowboys – a popular NFL punching bag – haven't played in one in decades.

It's mid-February, but the Cowboys are still the butt of the joke in the football world.
