Presidents Cup: USA maintains one-point lead
DUBLIN, Ohio — The International team held its own in foursomes — where the USA had been dominant — to stay within one point after the rain-interrupted second session of play was completed Saturday morning at Muirfield Village.
The score for foursomes was 3-3, and the USA leads 6½-5½.
The USA was 58-27-5 in foursomes entering Friday.
Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar stayed perfect this week, completing a 4-and-2 victory against Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.
Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth also won for the Americans, defeating Branden Grace and Richard Sterne 2 and 1.
The Internationals also completed two victories Saturday: Angel Cabrera and Marc Leishman, 2 and 1 against Webb Simpson and Hunter Mahan; and Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott, 2 and 1 against Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson.
Leishman's birdie on the 15th hole gave his side a 1-up lead. His 7-iron that plopped down a foot from the hole on the 17th for a birdie secured the victory. That was the pivotal match when the foursomes session concluded Saturday morning because of a rain delay.
Nearly an inch of rain fell on Friday, causing a delay of 2 hours, 34 minutes. Only two matches were finished Friday before darkness.
In the matches that finished, Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley won for the USA, defeating Jason Day and Graham DeLaet 4 and 3, and Ernie Els and Brendon de Jonge won for Internationals, defeating Bill Haas and Hunter Mahan 4 and 3.
