McIlroy, Spieth, Day featured in PGA Tour coverage
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy’s return to the PGA Tour highlights Friday’s exclusive coverage of the Deutsche Bank Championship on PGA Tour Live.
World No. 2 Jordan Spieth and world No. 3 Jason Day also are playing in the marquee groups at TPC Boston.
Coverage begins at 8:30 a.m. ET at pgatourlive.com, a subscription-based outlet that offers exclusive coverage.
McIlroy, who has two PGA Tour titles this year and three wins worldwide, is back after a two-week break. He ruptured a tendon in his left ankle July 4 and missed nearly two months. He returned at the PGA Championship and finished 17th. He missed last week’s Barclays, the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs, to give himself more time to strengthen his ankle.
“I'm excited that I have the opportunity now to get in and play a good run of golf, try to get myself into contention, try to win another couple of times before the end of the year,” said McIlroy, who reclaimed the world’s top spot without playing when Spieth missed the cut last week. “And if I can do that then it will be a good season. It won't be a great season. I didn't win a major, that's something I obviously wanted to do, I didn't do that. I have three worldwide wins this year, if I can get that to five or six by the end of the year I'll be happy.”
McIlroy, who is 15th in the FedExCup standings, is playing with Kevin Kisner (13) and Hideki Matsuyama (14) at 9:06 a.m. ET.
Day won last week’s Barclays by six shots over Henrik Stenson to overtake Spieth for the lead in the FedExCup. In his previous start, he held off Spieth by three shots to win the PGA Championship.
Spieth missed his third cut of the year last week in the Barclays.
Day and Spieth are off with Bubba Watson, who is third in the standings, at 9:30 a.m.
“It's been quite a run,” Day said. “It's been amazing for me just to see how this summer's kind of unfolded. But it was a good start to the FedExCup playoffs the last week with the win. I'm looking forward to another good week this week.”
