Can anyone catch Jason Day at BMW?
LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Can anyone catch Jason Day?
The Thunder from Down Under is en fuego and turning nearly every golf course he sees into a pitch-and-putt. The latest casualty is Conway Farms Golf Club, where Day shot 61-63 to reach 18 under through two rounds of the BMW Championship. He will take a 5-shot lead into today’s third round of the third leg of the FedExCup Playoffs.
After he failed to chip in from 44 yards for a 59 when the storm-delayed first round resumed Friday morning and he settled for a 61 – his career best – Day went out and made seven birdies and finished with an eagle to shoot 63.
Through 36 holes he has 16 birdies and two eagles. In four of his last eight rounds he’s shot 63 or lower. His 124 total set a 36-hole tournament record and matched the lowest opening 36-hole total in PGA Tour history.
“I feel like I should be paying to watch some of this,” said Jordan Spieth, who trails by seven shots despite shooting 65-66. “ … What (Jason) is doing on the golf course is something I haven't witnessed before.”
It’s become a familiar sight. With the win, Day will move from No. 3 in the world to No. 1. He has won three of his last five starts, including the PGA Championship where he set a major championship record in relation to par with his 20 under total. He is seeking his fifth win of the year.
“I feel very free and I feel like there's no stress, but there's obviously stress, but I'm enjoying it,” Day said. “It's good pressure, and I'm loving it. It's a good position to be in. But once again, today is finally done, and I can start focusing on (Saturday) and trying to focus on what I need to do to play well.”
Day’s closest pursuers are Daniel Berger (65-64) and Brendon Todd (66-63). Todd finished his second round by holing out from 81 yards with a wedge.
Kevin Na and Spieth are in a tie for fourth, seven back. Justin Thomas, George McNeill and Scott Percy are all 10 under – and eight back.
“You feel like there's nothing you can do,” Spieth said. “You try and get a little too aggressive on the greens when you don't feel like you're doing anything wrong, and I'm not doing anything wrong. Eleven-under is stout for two rounds, but the fact that I could double that and probably not win, well, may as well just try and double it, see what happens.”
