Rory McIlroy wants to win before shutting down season

NEW YORK — Rory McIlroy will give his 2017 season one final push.

After a disappointing T-22 finish at the 2017 PGA Championship two weeks ago, the  No. 4-ranked player in the world said he may be forced to skip the remainder of the season because of an ongoing back injury. But after a week recouping with his team in Northern Ireland, he's ready to give it one last go in time for the FedExCup Playoffs.

"I want to get through this PGA Tour season," McIlroy said at a FedEx St.Jude charity event at Yankees Stadium on Tuesday. "I want to get a win before I shut it down for the year."

Injuries have persisted throughout McIlroy's season.

A rib injury in January sidelined him for two months. He returned in time for the Masters in April but began experiencing pain again in May, this time in his back. A subsequent MRI revealed it was the result of a "low-grade response" to his original injury.

At the PGA Championship, McIlroy revealed that he was again experiencing pain and wouldn't rule out skipping the remainder of the season. McIlroy spent his week off resting, which gave him enough confidence to attempt to defend his FedExCup crown, starting at this week's Northern Trust Open.

"I'm excited for the next few weeks, but I'm also excited for the next few months," McIlroy said. "I'm going to give myself a proper offseason to heal and look to 2018."
