Indiana high school football coach dies after suffering stroke during game
An Indiana high school football coach died Monday after suffering a stroke Friday during a playoff game.
Phillip Bowsman, who coached at West Washington High School in Campbellsburg, Indiana, died Monday afternoon around 1:19 p.m., according to the school district. Bowsman also served as athletic director for the district.
Bowsman suffered a stroke due to a blood clot during Friday's game, superintendent Keith Nance said. He underwent brain surgery over the weekend to relieve pressure from swelling.
The district posted to its Facebook page Monday that "In true Coach Bowsman fashion, he made his final act of giving by being an organ donor."
The West Washington School Corp. cancelled classes for Monday and Tuesday.
Bowsman was with the West Washington School Corp. for 19 years. He was the head football coach of West Washington High for 16 seasons and athletic director for the past seven years.
