Paste BN High School Sports Awards: Los Angeles girls wrestling nominees
The Paste BN High School Sports Awards are slated to celebrate the top student-athletes in the Los Angeles area.
On June 18, 2020, at 6 p.m., Paste BN will fete high school standouts with a star-studded online show available free of charge to all viewers. The show will also be available on demand after the initial live event.
Here are the 10 nominees for Los Angeles Girls Wrestler of the Year.
Bethany Aviles
School: Warren High (Downey)
Class: 2020
Weight: 189
Noteworthy: The senior won her class at the Carter Invitational by outlasting Downey’s Vanessa Carrillo 3-0 for the title.
Cheyenne Bowman
School: Rowland High
Class: 2021
Weight: 143 pounds
Noteworthy: Bowman finished off Westminster’s Aine Drury with a pin en route to being named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the CIF championships.
Rebecca Camacho
School: Cerritos
Weight: 235 pounds
Class: 2020
Noteworthy: Camacho was the runner-up to Newbury Park’s Julia Richey, who pinned Camacho in the second period of their CIF state title match.
Aine Drury
School: Westminster High
Class: 2020
Weight: 143 pounds
Noteworthy: Drury finished in second for the second year in a row. A state champ two seasons ago, Rowland’s Cheyenne Bowman pinned her in the second period of the title match.
Kaycee Fitero
School: Cerritos
Class: 2020
Weight: 189 pounds
Noteworthy: After claiming the Northern Region title and finishing second at the CIF-Southern Section individual championships, Fitero finished seventh at state.
Johanna Forman
School: Upland High
Class: 2023
Weight: 137 pounds
Noteworthy: Forman was the only freshman to win a CIF state wrestling title when she captured the 137-pound title to finish 41-2 this season.
Tiera Jimerson
School: Northview High
Class: 2020
Weight: 131 pounds
Noteworthy: Jimerson won her first CIF-Southern Section individual championship with a 16-9 victory over Athena Wilden of Oak Hills in the 131-pound final. She followed that up a first-place finish at the CIF state meet.
America Lopez
School: Valencia High
Class: 2021
Weight: 170 pounds
Noteworthy: The third-seeded freshman exacted revenge on Katja Osteen of Royal High School, 2-1, to win the 170-pound title in the state meet.
Julia Richey
School: Newbury Park High
Class: 2021
Weight: 235 pounds
Noteworthy: Richey was patient before pinning Cerritos High’s Rebecca Camacho in the final minute of the second period to claim the CIF state title at 235 pounds.
Samantha Snow
School: Los Alamitos
Weight: 137 pounds
Class: 2020
Noteworthy: Snow fell to Golden Valley junior Aliana Lefotu twice in the CIF state championship to finish in sixth place.
