She's a Tiger holds off Fascinating to win Debutante
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — She's a Tiger held off fast-closing Fascinating by a half-length Saturday in the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar.
Ridden by Gary Stevens, She's a Tiger ran seven furlongs on the synthetic surface in 1:22.71 and paid $11, $5.40 and $3.80. The 50-year-old jockey, who began a comeback in January, won his fifth career Debutante and first since 2002 with Miss Houdini.
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert saddled three horses in the eight-horse field, including Fascinating, who returned $6.60 and $4.60. Awesome Baby, the even-money favorite, finished seventh. Secret Compass was fourth.
Concave paid $3.60 to show in the Grade 1 race.
The victory, worth $180,000, increased She's a Tiger's career earnings to $315,650. Jeff Bonde trains the half-sister to former star sprinter Smiling Tiger.
In the $110,400 Harry F. Brubaker Stakes, Summer Hit led all the way to win by 1¼ lengths.
Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Summer Hit ran one mile in 1:34.99 and paid $10.60 to win. The winner earned $72,420.
Wilkinson was second and Liaison was third. Sky Kingdom, the 5-2 favorite, finished fourth.
Victor Espinoza rode three winners on the 11-race card.
