Kentucky Derby field: Horses and odds for 2025 Run for the Roses

Are you ready for the "most exciting two minutes in sports"?
The 151st running of the Kentucky Derby is upon us and we are one step closer to the legendary horse race after the post position draw was announced Saturday, finalizing the field and and assigning each three-year-old thoroughbred a starting gate.
Starting gates No. 5 and No. 20 have had the best luck at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, with each lane producing 10 champions each, the most among all starting gates. Always Dreaming (2017) and Rich Stroke (2022) were the last champions from No. 5 and No. 20, respectively. Meanwhile, starting gate No. 17 is still looking for its first champion since the post started being used in 1930.
The Kentucky Derby marks the oldest continuously running sport event in the U.S., dating back to 1875. The race, which kicks off the Triple Crown, is 1¼ miles long or 12 furlongs, a commonly used metric in horse racing that's equivalent to 660 feet each.

Who is the favorite to win Kentucky Derby?
Santa Anita Derby winner Journalism is the current favorite to win the Kentucky Derby at 3-1.
As for how the horse got his moniker? Co-owner Aron Wellman was previously a sports editor of the Beverly Hills (California) High School newspaper and named the colt Journalism because it's "something that I value very much, and I appreciate responsible and diligent journalists."

What's the biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history?
Although there might be an odds-on favorite heading into the Kentucky Derby, all bets are off when the horses leave the starting gate and its anyone's race. It is not unheard of for a long shot to pull it off. Just three years ago, Rich Strike won the 2022 Kentucky Derby at 80-1 odds, marking the second-biggest upset in race history.
Donerail is the longest shot to win at 91-1 odds in 1913.
