In one more sleep, the quest for the Triple Crown begins with the 2025 Kentucky Derby, the marquee race on the horse racing calendar.

The Run for the Roses is filled with pomp and circumstance, as horse-goers and non-horse-goers from all around the country flock to Louisville, Kentucky and Churchill Downs to partake in the derby.

But that isn't the only thing remembered from the Kentucky Derby. That, of course, belongs to "the most exciting two minutes in sports," as 19 horses and jockeys go head-to-head against each other looking to etch their name into the history books.

The two minutes on the track at Churchill Downs can also be life-altering for owners of the horses and their jockeys through the Kentucky Derby purse.

How much is the 2025 Kentucky Derby purse?

Churchill Downs announced on April 21 that the purse for the 2025 Kentucky Derby will be the same as it was for the 150th edition of the Run for the Roses at $5 million.

The winner of Derby 151 will take home a cash prize of $3.1 million, which was a record-breaking winner's share this time last year when Mystik Dan won. The jockey of the winning horse will earn 10% of the first-place prize, which came out to be $310,000 last year.

Here's a breakdown of what the purse for this year's Kentucky Derby is:

  • 1st place: $3.1 million
  • 2nd place: $1 million
  • 3rd place: $500,000
  • 4th place: $250,000
  • 5th place: $150,000
