Adam Wainwright placed on DL with possible season-ending injury

St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright has been placed on the disabled list with an Achilles and ankle injury, and an MRI scheduled for Monday may determine whether he will be out for the season.

Wainwright hurt his left ankle while stumbling out of the batter's box during the fifth inning of the Cardinals' win at Milwaukee on Saturday night. He was wearing a walking boot after the game, and an Achilles' tear certainly would sideline him for the remainder of the season.

"It's something in the back of my ankle so we'll see what it is on Monday," Wainwright said after the game. "Everything right now is just all speculation."

Losing Wainwright for any extended period would be a significant blow to the Cardinals, off to a 12-5 start. Wainwright has a 1.44 earned-run average in his four starts this year, and won 20 games for them last season. He has a lifetime 121-67 record.

"Whether it's strained or torn, I don't think it's good news. No," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sunday morning. "I don't like to speculate until you have the full information, but if you ask me how I feel...not good. All those rumors floating around seem to have some validity to them."
