Orioles trade struggling reliever Brian Matusz to Braves
After eight seasons, the Baltimore Orioles decided to part ways with their former No. 1 pick -- Brian Matusz.
The left handed pitcher was traded along with a competitive balance draft pick (No. 76) to the Atlanta Braves for two minor-league pitchers -- right hander Brandon Barker and left hander Trevor Belicek.
Matusz has struggled mightily this season. The Orioles could have designated Matusz for assignment, but found a taker with the Braves.
In seven relief appearances, he's allowed eight earned runs in six innings for a 12.00 ERA while recording just one strikeout against seven walks. He also allowed three home runs on just ten flyballs.
Matusz, who started the season on the disabled list, had a breakout season in 2015 out of the bullpen, where he compiled a 2.94 ERA (16 ER/49.0 IP) in 58 games.
Matusz was in the final year of his contract.
