White Sox cut ties with Jimmy Rollins, promote Tim Anderson

The Chicago White Sox continued reshuffling their roster on Friday, designating shortstop Jimmy Rollins for assignment.

To fill the roster spot, the White Sox promoted prized prospect Tim Anderson.

Rollins, 37, was batting just .221 in 41 games after signing in late February. The move could mark the end of the 2007 National League MVP's career.

"He was at one point that young player who's coming in and needed playing time to continue his development at the big-league level," general manager Rick Hahn said. "And Jimmy took it like a pro."

Anderson, who entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the No. 1 Prospect, Best Hitter For Average and Best Athlete in the White Sox organization, is batting .304 with four homers in 55 games at Class AAA Charlotte this season. He is expected to replace Rollins as the everyday shortstop.

The moves come one day after the White Sox designated pitcher Mat Latos for assignment and signed veteran slugger and former AL MVP Justin Morneau.

By delaying his promotion until June 10, the White Sox have almost certainly prevented Anderson from reaching Super Two designation, which would allow him to be arbitration eligible four times instead of three.
