Mets' David Wright to have surgery for herniated disc in neck

The New York Mets announced Thursday that third baseman David Wright will undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck and there is no timetable for his return.

Wright, 33, was placed on the disabled list on June 3 and had been mulling whether or not to have the surgery. At that time, the organization said he would miss at least six weeks. The Mets said Thursday his return will be "determined based on the results of the procedure and the progress of his recovery."

Wright last played on May 27 and was batting .226 with seven home runs in 37 games.

"After trying every way to get back on the field, I've come to realize that it's best for me, my teammates and the organization to proceed with surgery at this time," Wright said in a statement Thursday. "My neck simply did not respond to any of the treatments of the past few weeks."

The seven-time All-Star only played 38 games in 2015 as he dealt with spinal stenosis, which requires an extensive workout to prepare for games.

Wright has spent his entire 13-year career with the Mets and is the franchise leader in multiple offensive categories, but has been limited by injuries almost every season since 2011. Signed to an extension in 2012, Wright's contract runs through 2020.
