MLB standings: Playoff picture entering Tuesday, Sept. 27
Days left in season: 6
Monday’s big mover: Baltimore. Detroit’s loss to Cleveland gives the Orioles a two-game cushion for the final wild card spot. Toronto’s brawl-marred loss to the New York Yankees means the O’s can possibly steal home-field advantage in the wild card game by taking at least two of three against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, beginning tonight.
Monday’s big loser: Houston. The Astros’ 12-inning home loss to the Seattle Mariners drops their wild card odds to 1.3%. They have two more left with the Mariners, but need to vault three teams for the final slot. See you in that gleaming new spring training facility in 2017.
Oh oh, it’s magic: The Red Sox can clinch the AL East in Yankee Stadium tonight, with David Price on the mound. A Baltimore win at Toronto will do the trick, too.
Tonight’s can’t miss game: Baltimore at Toronto, 7:07 ET. Kevin Gausman vs. Aaron Sanchez is appealing enough. That both teams must battle for playoff spots while knowing full well they’re likely to play each other in a knockout game one week from now only spices things up further.
