How MLB trades work after the non-waiver deadline

The non-waiver trade deadline has come and gone, but players can still be traded – it's just a bit more complicated.

In order to be traded after July 31, a player must clear revocable waivers. Waiver priority is determined by reverse standings (worst to best record) and the player's original club has three options if a claim is placed:

  1. Make a trade with the club that made the claim within 48 hours.
  2. Let the player go to the claiming team with no return and the new team responsible for all money remaining on his contract.
  3. Pull the player off waivers.

If a player clears waivers, he can be traded to any club – though all players on 40-man rosters must clear waivers before being dealt.

The Aug. 31 deadline represents the last day that a player can be acquired and be eligible for a team's postseason roster. Trades can still occur in September, but any players acquired after the deadline would not able to play in the postseason.
