Twins third baseman Miguel Sano won't be charged after hitting officer with car

Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano won't be charged following an accident early Sunday morning in the Dominican Republic, during which Sano hit a police officer with his car, according to ESPN.

The police officer suffered a broken leg in the incident and Sano was detained at the time. Sano was driving a vehicle without license plates and did not have his ID at the time.

On Monday, Frank Durant Mejia of the Dominican national police clarified that Sano was detained as a formality and that it was in fact an accident.

"The citizen, Miguel Sano, was sent today to the traffic court to comply with the due process in these types of cases," Duran told ESPN's Enrique Rojas. "It is a formality when someone is injured in a vehicular accident.

"It is important to clarify that the policeman declared that the accident was not intentional, and that Sano hit his leg when Sano was reversing his vehicle to leave the place and that the baseball player was the first to provide help and never abandoned the scene. Neither the agent nor the national police plan to charge Sano with anything."

Duran said that the officer, Argenis Emilio Gillandeux, was taken to the hospital by Sano himself and that the two knew each other, having attended school together. Sano also also offered to cover the medical expenses, according to Duran.

Sano, 25, was an All-Star in 2017.
