John Sterling's streak of calling Yankees games will come to an end Thursday
John Sterling, the familiar radio voice of the New York Yankees, will be taking a day off for the first time in three decades.
Sterling's streak of calling Yankees games will end Thursday in Tampa.
“For the moment, I’m a little under the weather,” Sterling told the New York Post. “I’ve put in the time. I want to feel better and they think this is the time for me to do it — and I agree.”
Sterling, who turns 81 on Thursday will be replaced on the radio broadcast by Ryan Ruocco of the YES Network.
He says he plans to "broadcast the (Subway Series) games at Citi Field (Tuesday and Wednesday) and then I'll take the weekend off and then All-Star break, so I'll have a week to get myself together," Sterling told WFAN Sports Radio.
Sterling's radio partner Suzyn Waldman is expected to work the Thursday game alongside Ruocco.
