Yankees' Edwin Encarnacion lands on injured list with wrist fracture

NEW YORK – Edwin Encarnacion became the latest in a long line of Yankees to hit the injured list, and he could be gone until sometime in September.
The Yankees’ slugger was diagnosed with a right wrist fracture, after being hit by a pitch during the eighth inning of the Yankees’ 9-2 win in Saturday’s day-night doubleheader opener.
Encarnacion had gone 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a single off the left-center field wall.
Lefty-hitting first baseman Mike Ford was recalled from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and on his way to the Bronx between games of the doubleheader.
According to the Yankees, Encarnacion will remain in New York and will be re-evaluated in the next week to 10 days.
Combined this season with the Mariners and Yankees, Encarnacion is batting .240 with 30 home runs and 76 RBI in 101 games (384 at-bats).
Drilled by a fastball by Red Sox right-handed reliever Josh Smith, Encarnacion hopped around in pain but remained in the game; he was the designated hitter.
Originally, the Yankees declared that initial X-rays were negative. The announcement came about 90 minutes later that Encarnacion was the 24th Yankee (and 16th current) to land on the IL this year.
