ATLANTA — For all of the ugliness of the New York Mets' 2023 season, it may have taken a more inauspicious turn on Wednesday night in Atlanta.

In the first inning, Pete Alonso was hit on the left arm by a 97 mph fastball from Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton and had to be removed from the game. He initially hobbled toward first base before leaving after a discussion with Buck Showalter and the Mets trainer.

The Mets received a bit of good news as X-rays came back negative and Alonso was diagnosed with a left wrist contusion. He is considered day-to-day.

Tommy Pham came on as a pinch runner and moved to left field as Mark Canha replaced Alonso at first base.

He drew the ire of Braves fans during Wednesday night's game after he was caught saying "Throw it again," to Bryce Elder from the Mets' dugout after blasting a two-run shot in the second inning on Tuesday. Fans at Truist Park booed loudly when Alonso was announced in the lineup and cheered when he was hit and removed from the game.

After Tuesday night's game, Elder did not seem to take offense to Alonso's antics.

"I mean, if I hit one on the concourse, I might holler, too," Elder told reporters.

Alonso leads Major League Baseball with 22 home runs and the National League with 49 RBI through 61 games this season. Alonso has played in all 62 of the Mets' games this season after missing two contests during the 2022 season.
