Growing pains: Yankees' Jasson Dominguez having a tough time in the outfield

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Under heavy scrutiny as he still adapts to left field, Jasson Dominguez couldn’t corral Edmundo Sosa’s drive to the left field track off Carlos Rodon, which became an RBI double.
This appeared to be a catchable ball, on a play made more difficult when Dominguez leaped in front of the wall − the ball went off his glove.
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it “about as tough a play as you’re going to have… top spin, over your head, bullet – tough play. We’ll look at it. Still got work to do, obviously.’’
“I think he has all the tools to become an elite defender," said Rodon. “That’s something that can take time… it takes work.
“I have the utmost confidence in that kid, because he puts in the work. He has all the ability in the world as well."
Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe in the infield
Defensively, the new DP combination of Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second and Anthony Volpe at short turned two more double plays Thursday, one of them a not-so-routine play started by Volpe on a slow roller.
“I think we can be the best shortstop-second baseman in the league, definitely defensively,’’ Chisholm Jr. said. “I think we’re probably going to turn the most double plays in the league as well.’’
Chisholm Jr. also said he’s gunning for a Silver Slugger Award and an All-Star appearance, as well as a Gold Glove.
“We expect the best of ourselves,’’ said Volpe. “Not comparing us to anyone else, just doing the best" we can.
