MLB All-Star Game: All-time series record, history between American and National League

Major League Baseball's biggest night has arrived: Welcome to the Midsummer Classic.
For the 95th time, the American League and National League will meet on the diamond in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, which is set to start at 8 p.m. ET in Atlanta at Truist Park on July 15 with Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes matching up with Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal on the mound.
Though the All-Star Game has lost some of its buzz over the last couple of years, as several players — most notably Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler — opted out of the game or declined a replacement invitation to prioritize their health before the second half, the annual exhibition game is still filled with talent.
One of those stars is Milwaukee Brewers' 23-year-old pitching phenom Jacob Misiorowski, who made history by being named an All-Star just after five starts in the majors. There's also Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who continued his historic season last night by becoming the first catcher to win the Home Run Derby. The list is endless from there with future Hall of Famers like Freddie Freeman, Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge and young stars in Bobby Witt Jr. and Pete Crow-Armstrong to name a few.
Winning the Midsummer Classic has also become an American League tradition of sorts over the last, as it has dominated the All-Star Game for much of the last two decades. Will the National League get back in the win column in 2025, or will the American League start a new win streak of its own?
Here's what you need to know about the history of the MLB All-Star Game:
Who leads MLB All-Star Game series?
- Series history: AL leads 48-44-2
- American League's last win: 2024 (5-3 win)
- National League's last win: 2023 (3-2 win)
The American League leads the National League 48-44-2 in the all-time series record of the MLB All-Star Game.
The American League has dominated the Midsummer Classic over the last decade, as the American League has won 11 of the last 12 All-Star Games. That dominance only strengthens for the American League when you go back further in the record books, as the American League has won 19 of the last 24 All-Star Games since 2000.
The National League's longest win streak in the All-Star Game spanned from 1972 to 1982, when it won 11 consecutive games. The National League's 11-game win streak is the longest win streak by a single league in the history of the All-Star Game.
The two ties in the All-Star Game came in 1961 and 2002.
How many times has the American League won MLB All-Star Game?
The American League has won the MLB All-Star Game 48 times, with its most recent win coming last year in the 94th Midsummer Classic in Arlington, Texas.
After seeing its 11-game win streak come to a close in 2023, the American League got back in the win column last summer with a 5-3 win over the National League at Globe Life Field, though it might not have looked that way after the first two innings when the NL led 3-0 after a Ohtani hit a three-run home run.
A three-run bottom of the third inning for the American League kept things even at 3-3 until the fifth, when Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran hit the go-ahead two-run home run. Cleveland Guardians reliever Emmanuel Clase would close things down in the ninth to pick up his second All-Star Game save in three years.
How many times has the National League won MLB All-Star Game?
The National League has won the MLB All-Star Game 44 times, with its most recent win coming in the 93rd Midsummer Classic in 2023 in Seattle. The 2023 All-Star Game win snapped a nine-game losing skid for the National League.
Trailing 2-1 entering the top of the eighth inning at T-Mobile Park, then-Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz put the National League in front 3-2 with a 360-foot, two-run home run off of Baltimore Orioles reliever Felix Bautista.
The American League would try to tie — or retake the lead — twice in the eighth and ninth innings but failed to bring across any runs. In the eighth inning, it was Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley who made an impressive double-play from his knees to get out of the inning, while it was Craig Kimbrel working himself out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to get the save.

Is World Series home field advantage rewarded for winning MLB All-Star Game?
No, the league winner of the All-Star Game no longer receives home-field advantage in the World Series. Major League Baseball made the change in 2017 that the All-Star Game would no longer have something "to play for," as home-field advantage for the Fall Classic would be rewarded to the team with the better winning percentage of the two teams that make the World Series.
From 2003 to 2017, the league winner of the All-Star Game would get home get home-field advantage in the best-of-seven World Series. Prior to that, the American League and National League would alternate who gets home-field advantage.
