DBacks' Corbin Carroll, Eugenio Suarez named to NL All-Star team
Right fielder Corbin Carroll and third baseman Eugenio Suarez were named reserves on the National League All-Star team, joining teammate Ketel Marte as the Diamondbacks’ representatives in Atlanta.
For Carroll and Suarez, both of whom are All-Stars for the second time, their selections cap bouncebacks of sorts.
Carroll endured a difficult 2024, during which his performance lagged behind his breakout season as a rookie the year before. But he has been as productive as ever through the first half of this year, hitting .251/.335/.564 with 20 homers, nine triples and 13 doubles.
“It’s a great recognition,” Carroll said. “I’m really happy to be in this position compared to the spot I was last year. I think it says a lot about the work that we put in, both individually but as a group, too. I think when you talk about the individual accomplishments and accolades and being recognized, a lot of that is based on the work of kind of the whole of our offense.”
A year ago, Suarez was among the worst hitters in baseball. On July 6, 2024, he had a .203/.293/.320 line, causing the Diamondbacks to consider cutting ties with him. But he caught fire starting the next day and rode that hot streak into this season.
From July 7, 2024, through the end of last year, Suarez hit .311/.348/.625 with 24 homers. So far this year, he has hit .255/.322/.569 with 28 homers and 73 RBIs.
Over his past 365 days entering the Diamondbacks’ series finale against the Royals on Sunday, July 6, Suarez was hitting .281/.336/.594 with 52 homers and 140 RBIs.
“It’s obviously very special; I feel so happy about it,” Suarez said. “I’ve been putting a lot of hard work into my year and career, even in the offseason, working so hard to be successful and have good results. To be announced today as an All-Star, for me, personally, it feels great. I feel happy. I feel proud of myself.”
Suarez said he has not been asked to participate in the home run derby, but he would love to participate. Suarez said he was not going to lobby anyone in hopes of getting an invite.
“I’m not going to tell everybody that I want to do it; I would prefer they ask me for it,” Suarez said. “I’m not the guy who is going to push for it. It’s OK if I’m not participating. Being in the All-Star Game, for me, already means a lot.”
