Terry Francona will miss Indians game Tuesday for tests
Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona will miss Tuesday's home game against the San Diego Padres because he has been admitted to the Cleveland Clinic, according to a report from the Associated Press.
Francona had gone through his pregame routine at Progressive Field earlier in the day before leaving for the hospital, even swimming in the pool, Indians President Chris Antonetti told AP.
The Indians manager has been in the hospital twice for a rapid heart rate and experiencing dizziness. The doctors didn't see a major problem and fitted him with a heart monitor. Antonetti told AP that the 58-year-old Francona did not experience the symptoms again and the tests are being done to determine what's causing the issue. Antonetti didn't know if Francona would spend the night at the hospital or when he would resume his managerial duties.
Francona was hospitalized following a June 13 game and returned the following night. He was admitted again during a June 26 game and missed the following night's contest. Last August, he missed a game after experiencing chest pains but was back the next day.
Francona told reporters after that second missed game that doctors think medications and stress could be contributing reasons for his symptoms. "It's happened a few times," he said at the time. "Sometimes they're more severe than others. A lot of times I'll take a deep breath and I'll be OK. There's been a few times I haven't been able to."
The Indians play three games against the Padres and will host the Detroit Tigers for three games before the All-Star break. Francona is still scheduled to manage the American League team in the All-Star Game in Miami on July 11. Bench coach Brad Mills will run the Indians in Francona's absence.
