Jarred Kelenic was so upset after striking out against the Jhoan Durán in the ninth inning of the Seattle Mariners' 6-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday that he kicked a water cooler in the dugout, breaking a bone in his foot.

The team placed Kelenic on the 10-day injured list Thursday, manager Scott Servais announced.

When addressing the incident with reporters, the outfielder teared up and couldn't speak. He held his face in his hands and wiped his tears on his shirt.

"I let the emotions get the best of me there," he said once he composed himself. "I feel terrible, especially for the guys. I just, I let the emotions get the best of me and I just, I let them down and I take full responsibility for it. It's on me. It just can't happen."

Kelenic was the third Mariners player at the plate with the team down by three runs. Before him, J.P. Crawford got on base with a single and Julio Rodríguez was then hit by a pitch. Kelenic's at-bat featured nine pitches, including four foul balls before Durán, who has 16 saves on the season, caught him looking.

"We came up last night with the game on the line, two guys on, against arguably the best closer in baseball," Kelenic said. "I was just trying to put together a good at-bat, was just grinding and unfortunately I couldn't come through. And like I said, I made a mistake."

Kelenic was on a seven-game hit streak and made a big play Monday in a win as Seattle attempts to reach .500 after hosting the All-Star Game last week.

"I think that's the biggest thing is that I love to win, huge competitor," Kelenic said, "and that's the hardest part is that now I can't be out there to help the guys and that's my fault."

Kelenic's injury came the same day that New York Yankees pitcher Tommy Kahnle destroyed a cooling fan in the dugout and Miami Marlins third base coach Jody Reed broke his leg after being hit with a line drive foul ball.
