Marlins announce Muhammad Ali's death hours before official

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Miami Marlins on Friday night stood by their announcement that boxing legend Muhammad Ali has died.

Marlins senior director of communications Matt Roebuck told Paste BN Sports that team president David Samson learned of Ali's death from a person close to Ali shortly before the team’s game against the New York Mets ended.

Hours later, a statement from family spokesperson Bob Gunnell announced the passing of Ali.

Earlier Friday,  Ali was listed in fair condition at an undisclosed hospital in the Phoenix area.

Roebuck said the Marlins apologized for the timing of their announcement because they realized the family had not made Ali's death public.

"We wanted to honor (Ali's) legacy and put a message on the scoreboard at the conclusion of the game, and we were unaware at the time that the announcement of (Ali's) passing had not been made public," Roebuck told Paste BN Sports. "I know that our team president is certain of his passing.

"Ali is a close friend of several members of our organization so there is a connection there."
