Miami Marlins third base coach Jody Reed was hit by friendly fire.

Reed exited Miami's 6-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday in the third inning after he was hit in the lower right leg by a foul line drive from Marlins outfielder Jesús Sánchez.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said X-rays confirmed that Reed suffered a leg fracture.

“I’m pretty sure he broke his leg,” Schumaker said during his post-game press conference. "He had X-rays and the doctor said it was broke, so we’ll see how long he’s out for, unfortunately."

Schumaker said he's not sure how long Reed will be unavailable. Marlins quality control coach Griffin Benedict replaced Reed at third base during the game, but it's not clear if Benedict will take over the role in his absence.

It's the latest blow for the Marlins (53-45), who lost their sixth straight game since the regular season resumed after All-Star break.

"It was a frustrating road trip. No doubt about it. That's not what we envisioned when we came back," Schumaker added.

Reed hit .270 with 27 homers and 392 RBIs during an 11-year playing career from 1987-197. He managed in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers before joining the Marlins.
