New York Mets rookie Patrick Mazeika makes MLB history with another walk-off – and no hits
Still seeking his first career hit, Patrick Mazeika has managed to plate three runs. He's had his shirt ripped off twice, as two of his RBI have been walk-offs.
He's also making century-old MLB history in the process.
Research from MLB and Elias Sports says the New York Mets rookie catcher is the first player with multiple walk-off RBI before recording a hit in at least 100 years. Mazeika is also the first player with two walk-off RBI in his first four career games since 1920 (when RBI became an official statistic).
Lastly, Mazeika is the first player since 1955 (Cincinnati's Joe Brovia) with three RBI before his first hit, according to Stats By STATS.
Neither of Mazeika's walk-offs left the infield, and all four of his at-bats have come as a pinch-hitter.
His first stint as hero came on May 7 in the 10th inning when he dribbled a ball up the first base line and Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Stefan Circhton could not flip it to the plate before Pete Alonso scored the winning run, with Mazeika being awarded an RBI on the fielder's choice.
Mazeika hit the ball harder Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles with a grounder to first, but Jonathan Villar beat the tag despite the infield playing in, another RBI fielder's choice.
He also walked with the bases loaded against the Diamondbacks on Sunday to drive in a run.
