David Stearns hired as Mets' first president of baseball operations, reports say
The New York Mets have a new leader atop their baseball operations division.
The organization has hired David Stearns, 38, on a five-year contract to be the team's first president of baseball operations in franchise history, according to multiple reports. SNY's Andy Martino was first to report the hire.
The Mets have been searching for a president of baseball operations since 2020, with the Milwaukee Brewers denying them an opportunity to interview Stearns after the 2021 season. Now, the Mets have lured their guy to return home. He will serve above general manager Billy Eppler.
Stearns, who grew up in New York City as a Mets fan, has spent the last eight seasons in the Brewers organization.
Stearns was named Brewers general manager in October 2015 and was promoted to team president of baseball operations in 2019, where he served until 2022 before taking on an advisory role.
With Stearns, a Harvard graduate, leading the charge, the Brewers made four straight playoff appearances between 2018-21, including a National League Championship Series appearance in 2018. The Brewers currently lead the NL Central with an 80-63 record.
Prior to joining the Brewers, Stearns was the assistant general manager with the Houston Astros for three seasons between 2013-15 and spent one season with the Cleveland organization. He worked in the Office of the Commissioner between 2008-11.
