Marty Brennaman rarely talks politics, but the Hall of Fame broadcaster says he can't remain silent about the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso.

The Reds play-by-play man is so irate about last weekend's shootings and the rash of others that have occurred across America in recent years, in fact, Brennaman says he might abandon Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

In an interview with The Enquirer's That's So Cincinnati podcast, Brennaman reiterated some things that he said on the air before last Sunday's game in Atlanta.

"All I said was it is beyond my comprehension that the politicians we have in this country — either side of the aisle is irrelevant — have to be able to come up with a solution to minimize or eliminate the mass shootings that our country has become noted for," Brennaman said on the podcast.

Brennaman got a little more political while on the podcast.

"I’m a Republican, and I’m proud to say that," he said. "I voted for the guy in the White House. I don’t know whether I’d vote for him again. It can’t be about politics. It can’t be watching people killed, and a guy getting called at 2 in the morning in Dayton from a deep sleep and told that his sister was killed when she’s in the Oregon District having a big time."

Noticeably fired up, Brennaman insisted it's time for gun reform.

"What in the hell does a normal citizen have the right to own an assault weapon?" Marty said. "I don’t get it. I don’t know anything that’s upset me more on the heels of El Paso than what happened in Dayton."

His radio comments "incurred the wrath of some listeners," Brennaman said, but he felt he had to say something.

The days are winding down for Brennaman to use his loud megaphone to speak out on the issue. He retires next month after 46 years in the booth.
