Reds rookie Aristides Aquino continues record pace with another homer
WASHINGTON – Another day, another home run from Cincinnati Reds rookie Aristides Aquino.
In the seventh inning Wednesday, Aquino clubbed a 387-foot, solo home run to right field. It was his ninth home run of the season – and he was called up to the big leagues less than two weeks ago.
Aquino is the first player since at least 1900 with nine home runs in 14 career games, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story set the previous record with eight in 2016.
In 13 games this season, Aquino is batting .386 with 17 RBI and 13 runs. He leads the Majors in RBI this month, tied for lead in homers with Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. and second in slugging percentage (1.023).
He reached nine home runs in 47 career plate appearances, the fewest in MLB history. The next closest is Philadelphia's Rhys Hoskins with 65.
Aquino ranks second in MLB history for fewest plate appearances needed for nine home runs in a season. Arizona's Luis Gonzalez hit nine homers in 43 plate appearances in 2001.
Combined with his time at Triple-A Louisville, Aquino has 37 homers in 91 games this year.
