Red Sox hire Tony La Russa as special assistant

The Boston Red Sox hired Tony La Russa to their front office, where he'll serve as special assistant to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, the team announced Thursday.
La Russa, a World Series-winning manager with the Oakland Athletics in 1989 and St. Louis Cardinals in 2006 and 2011, stepped away from managing duties after 33 years in 2011. He spent the past four seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks' front office, and his contract with the organization expired Tuesday. In 2014, he was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
