Sources: LaTroy Hawkins agrees to become Rockies' closer

The Colorado Rockies agreed with veteran reliever LaTroy Hawkins on a one-year, $2.5 million contract to be their closer, two people with knowledge of the deal told Paste BN Sports.

The people, unauthorized to speak publicly until Hawkins completes his physical Thursday, said Hawkins will receive $2.25 million in 2013 and either $2.25 million or a 250,000 buyout in 2014.

Hawkins, 40, has appeared in 943 games in his 19-year career, the most of any active pitcher. Last season he went 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 70 2/3 innings with the New York Mets. Hawkins pitched for the Rockies in 2007. He has 101 career saves, with a high of 28 in 2001 for the Minnesota Twins.

Rex Brothers and Rafael Betancourt split time as Colorado's closers in 2013, with 19 and 16 saves respectively. Betancourt is a free agent.
