Kansas City Royals prospect Bobby Witt Jr. blasts a home run nearly 500 feet
Kansas City Royals prospect Bobby Witt Jr., the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 draft, is turning heads this spring, making the most of his first opportunity at big league camp.
On Monday, the 20-year-old shortstop blasted a mammoth 484-foot home run off Oakland Athletics reliever Yusmeiro Petit that landed in the left-field concourse at Surprise Stadium in Arizona.
“It was all wind,” said a grinning Royals manager Mike Matheny, according to MLB.com. “That’s what I told Bobby."
It was his second home run in three days. In eight Cactus League games, Witt Jr. is 6-for-17 with 12 total bases, including two homers, six RBI and a 1.095 OPS.
Witt Jr., the son of former major league pitcher Bobby Witt, hasn’t played above Rookie ball and spent all of last season at the Royals’ alternate training site. MLB Pipeline ranked Witt seventh on its prospect list.
