Eli: Jeter 'set the bar for athletes in New York City'
LANDOVER, Md. — Eli Manning calls Derek Jeter his role model. So of course Manning knew the New York Yankees shortstop had delivered a game-winning, walk-off single Thursday night in his final game at Yankee Stadium.
Manning got the news on the Giants sideline after throwing four touchdowns passes in the New York Giants' 45-14 win over the Washington Redskins.
"He hit a walk-off single to win it (6-5 over the Baltimore Orioles) in his last home game, so that's very Jeter-like. It sounds about right," said Manning.
"He's always been clutch and steps up in big moments, and no doubt if he would be put in that situation he would come through again."
Manning, a two-time Super Bowl winner, said he tries to emulate Jeter.
"I've taken a lot of lessons from Derek. ... How he's handled a lot of things, how he deals with the media, how he's perceived by the fans," said Manning.
"He works hard. His commitment to his craft, being a good teammate, being a good leader, I've tried to watch him and learn from him. He's definitely been a role model for me my first 10 years and will continue to be, (to) kind of follow that style of being an athlete in New York City.
"It will be tough to emulate him. There's no way you can do it. He definitely set the bar for athletes in New York City."
