Yankees sluggers Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton say no to Home Run Derby
TORONTO – Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are content to let someone else win the Home Run Derby crown.
As recent champions, neither of the Yankees sluggers plans to participate in the Derby on Monday, a day before the All-Star Game at Nationals Park in Washington DC.
“I don’t think so,’’ said Stanton, who won the Derby in 2016 and was knocked out last year by Gary Sanchez at his then-home stadium, Marlins Park, when Judge took the title.
“Don’t want to; I’ve done it plenty of times,’’ Stanton said of his reasoning. “Take a year off, take two years off, if I want.’’
Stanton is among the contenders in the fan balloting for the final AL All-Star spot, while Judge was voted a starting outfielder for the second consecutive season.
“This year we’ve got something special going. I kind of said I’m not going…and I want to stay healthy,’’ said Judge, who fell into a deep slump following last year’s Derby.
