Yankees backup catcher Austin Romine pitches ninth inning in blowout loss to Red Sox

Many wondered if Aaron Boone would turn to Austin Romine at some point in the American League Division Series, just not like this.

Romine, the New York Yankees backup catcher, came on to pitch the ninth inning during the Game 3 blowout at the hands of the Boston Red Sox on Monday. He started out strong with two quick outs, but eventually conceded a two-run homer to give Brock Holt the cycle. Holt's cycle was historic, the first in the long history of the Major League Baseball playoffs.

The homer made the score 16-1, and he caught the attention of former Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes:

Romine finished with one hit, one walk and two runs allowed in the inning. For what it's worth, Romine allowed less runs than full-time pitchers Lance Lynn and Stephen Tarpley.
