With win No. 100 on Thursday night, the New York Yankees clinched their first American League East division title in seven years.

DJ LeMahieu opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the second inning and Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run in seven innings to power the Yankees to a 9-1 defeat of the Los Angeles Angels.

Brett Gardner, Cameron Maybin and Clint Frazier also homered as the Yankees matched their win total from last year -- with eight games to play in the regular season.

In the race for the top seed in the AL playoffs, the Yankees moved to a half game behind the Houston Astros, who were idle on Thursday.
