Indianapolis 500 2025 picks, predictions, odds for Sunday's race

The 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 is happening this Sunday, and there are tons of storylines to follow approaching race day.
After Team Penske was caught illegally modifying some of their cars, Josef Newgarden and Will Power were penalized and sent to the back of the field to start Sunday's race. Newgarden, the back-to-back Indy 500 champion, will start Sunday's race at a massive disadvantage as he looks to secure his third consecutive victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Power, the 2018 winner, seeks his second Indy 500 victory.
Elsewhere, Helio Castroneves is looking for his fifth victory in the event, which would be the most in the history of the legendary race. Doing so will obviously be very difficult though. Castroneves has won the race as recently as 2021 but hadn't won since 2009 prior to that. Furthermore, in his most recent attempt at his fifth Borg-Warner Trophy, he finished in 20th place, the worst finish of his career. Perhaps his chance at making history has already passed him by.
See who the experts and oddsmakers predict to win and see details on how to watch Sunday's race.
Predictions for 2025 Indy 500
Nathan Brown, Indy Star motor sports reporter: Alex Palou to win
Brown writes, "Is it predictable? Yes, but Palou has proven over the course of the last three months that picking against him is largely silly. He’s yet to win on an oval in his career, but the championship leader checks that box with the help of a pit crew that’s been nearly flawless all year and a car that’s been near the top of the charts virtually every session this month."
Aaron Ferguson, Indy Star motor sports editor: Scott Dixon to win
Ferguson writes: It would be a statement weekend for (Chip) Ganassi to win after being outspoken about (Team) Penske. Dixon won in 2008 and has finished second three times and has five poles, so I’m trusting the veteran."
Dana Hunsinger Benbow, Indy Star enterprise reporter: Takuma Sato to win
Benbow writes: "This two-time Indy 500 champ has the skill, the experience and the IMS wisdom to become the oldest winner in history at 48."
Curt Cavin, Indycar.com: Palou to win
Cavin writes: "[Palou] has led 119 total laps in the event, and I can make a case he could have won this event in 2021 (beaten by Helio Castroneves in a late-race shootout), 2022 (came back to finish ninth after getting caught out by a caution) and 2023 (scrambled back to finish fourth after being struck by Rinus VeeKay on pit road)."
