IndyCar reveals big updated rule for the 2025 Indianapolis 500
The NTT IndyCar Series has updated a big rule ahead of the 2025 Indianapolis 500 in May. On Thursday, IndyCar revealed updated eligibility and protocols for replacements drivers beginning with this year's Indy 500. This is in response to Kyle Larson's attempt at "The Double" in 2024, with weather almost forcing him to quit the event.
According to IndyCar, a "replacement driver will only be considered if the primary [entered] driver also is participating in another marquee event with the driver’s principal racing series on Indianapolis 500 Race Day." The veteran replacement driver also "must pass the Indianapolis Motor Speedway refresher program in the entry during the first day of Indianapolis 500 practice."
There are also other minor updates, such as the tire allotment (no extra sets) and starting position of the vehicle (rear of the field), but the replacement driver being approved is the biggest hurdle. Larson won't miss the Coca-Cola 600 again, meaning that Tony Kanaan might be in line for a start with McLaren in the 2025 Indianapolis 500, if needed.
