Edwards, Kahne lament contact, missed opportunity at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — A late-race accident derailed victory chances for Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards in Sunday's Kobalt 400 Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Kahne and Edwards were chasing leader (and eventual winner) Kevin Harvick when Edwards bumped into Kahne, pushing him into the outside wall in turn two. Kahne came down the track and hit Edwards side-to-side, sending his car into a spin.

Both drivers finished the race, although Edwards limped home 42nd and Kahne lost a lap for repairs, finishing 17th.

After the race, Edwards took the blame for the wreck and apologized to Kahne.

"I was being too aggressive on that restart (on lap 193)," Edwards said. "Kasey got on the outside of me, and he got just the right position. I started to slide up, and I should have backed out of it way earlier. That's completely my fault and that's what ruined our day.

"That's not something I normally do, so I have to make it up to everybody next week at Phoenix."

Edwards called his action "pretty stupid. I just should have been a little calmer, but it's kind of fun racing up front like that, and it got me going and I just got a little over-aggressive."

Kahne said Edwards was at fault.

"We basically needed a full-car width more there in order to make it (through the turn side by side)," he said. "He just never lifted and ran me just right into the wall and ruined his day, as well. He just apologized for that.

"It's disappointing. Nothing we can do now, but we did have a great car."
